What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is what we consider to be the truth about fitness. When you strip away all the bells, whistles, flash and flair of the mainstream fitness culture, what are you left with? We believe the answer is the truth about fitness. Just like in life, the ones that succeed are the ones that are willing to roll up their sleeves and go to work until the job is done. To us at CrossFit Central CT that is what it is all about, there is no substitute for hard work. We provide the opportunity to discover the truth about fitness as well as the truth about yourself. Do you have what it takes? Can you handle the truth? All you need is the desire and willingness to make a better life for yourself. If you make that commitment to us and to yourself we will do everything possible to help you optimize your potential.
How do we do this?
We use CrossFit as our primary training protocol:
“CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity.” Coach Greg Glassman
We teach absolute “newbies” as well as elite athletes how to implement functional exercises, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, metabolic conditioning, kettlebell training, plyometrics and medicine ball training. You will work hard relative to your current level of fitness but you will do so in a group of your peers, all striving for the same thing: the Truth. We have no mirrors, no machines and no egos in our gym, though we do ask that you bring your top game. We accept no excuses!
What can I expect?
a. Optimized physical competence in each of 10 recognized fitness domains:

Testimonials

Four months ago I went to my doctor for my annual physical and was told I was unhealthy. At 6’2” I weighed 288 lbs and my blood pressure was 135/95. At 27 years old I was put on blood pressure medicine. I realized I had to make a lifestyle change. I found CrossFit and it has changed my life. From the 1st day Tom and his staff have help me to become a healthier individual. Every day I am pushed to the limit by the WOD and the trainers ensure I have proper form and technique. CrossFit Central CT is a place where anyone can be successful with a little hard work. The high intensity WOD’s are different every day and one never knows what kind of work out to expect until you walk in the door. CrossFit Central CT is a great place to train and what makes it even better is that the staff wants to help everyone become a better CrossFit athlete. I recently returned to the doctor’s for a check up and was deemed healthy by the doctor. Today I am down to 245 lbs and my blood pressure is now 120/75. I was taken off the medicine. I owe my improved health to the staff at CrossFit Central CT. If you want to improve your health and strength CrossFit Central CT is the place to be.

I was always athletic growing up, but after college I no longer was part of a team and the gym certainly wasn’t next to my dorm. I joined the corporate world sitting on my ass for 8-9 hours a day. Any fitness I had quickly deteriorated into the unforgiving cushion of my desk chair.
I tried to get back into lifting weights many times but constantly struggled with many issues.
• I was continuously bothered old nagging injuries. Every time I tried to get back to working out I aggravated one of them.
• Gym staff and trainers do not know fitness or diets, they know Muscle and Fitness and what supplement is going to get you big.
• Following the diet of the media or the latest fad book is not successful.
After 7 years of being out of college I found myself easily injured, weak, and breathing heavy after going up a flight of stairs. I started CrossFit at CrossFit Central CT at the end of 2008.
What I liked about CrossFit was their approach to exercise, I felt that the program was complete it addressed all physical skills required for optimum physical competence as well as recommendations on diet.
After 5 weeks of working out with Tom and the other trainers I have lost 10 lbs and am feeling better everyday. Its due to Tom being a d***, not letting you half ass a workout. Or the other trainers with their “3,2,1, Go” pushing you to finish the WOD.

“I have never really liked going to the gym or working out, and for years I have been trying to find a exercise program that I could stick to. Tom Taylor and CrossFit is a perfect fit for me. It’s the only exercise I truly enjoy and I never feel bored. Tom has been such a big help. He modified the exercises to fit my limitations and exercise level and I have been feeling the improvements in my health and well being since we started a couple of months ago. I feel stronger and have more energy than I have had in years. Tom is the only personal trainer I have ever recommended to my patients in over my 15 years of practice. Tom and CrossFit is the perfect combination for anyone looking to get in better shape, regardless of the current level of health and fitness. I highly recommend him and his exercise style.”

I have to admit that I was skeptical about CrossFit training when I first heard about it from my son-in-law, even though he was my son-in-law. I wanted him to train my teenage son, Brock who was sophomore in High School and participating in both football and track. Brock did not begin CrossFit training until after the football season was over and began his winter lifting program under the supervision of the football coaches. His initial maximum for benching was 185 pounds and for squats it was 285 pounds. After participating in CrossFit training for two months he tested again. This time his maximum bench was 215 pounds and his maximum squat was 305. His classmates only increased their maximums by five or ten pounds. The only thing different was Brock was doing CrossFit and they weren’t. Since he has seen the improvement in his performance Brock now enthusiastically does the training on his own when my son-in-law is not available to train him. I wish there was CrossFit training for homework.

When I first heard about Crossfit I thought it was going to be easy. I thought “I’m in good shape how hard could it be?” but after the first session my eyes were opened. There is no other program that is quite as effective as Crossfit. After increasing my bench and squat max 30 pounds each in about 2 months I think it is safe to say that Crossfit is the best.

“I always felt that being fit and strong was for other people. The kind of people who were willing to spend hours a day at the gym. I envied them, and knew I could never fit that amount of commitment into my schedule. And then Tom Taylor and Crossfit walked into my life. I was skeptical and weak.
Within 1 month of doing CrossFit 2x a week, I was gaining muscle and strength for my daily life. My metabolism increased tremendously. And I have to admit; I look pretty darn good in a pair of jeans these days. I actually began to crave these workouts that took only 30 minutes or less. And they were interesting!!! I never get bored.
Tom is patient, skilled and passionate about getting you strong for your life, no matter what your fitness level is. At 38, I look forward to many years of increased strength and vitality due to CrossFit and Tom Taylor.”

After adopting a 3 to 4 time a week yoga lifestyle about a year and a half ago, I thought I was beginning to get into pretty good shape. I had dropped some weight and was feeling more energetic. I even survived an Anna Forrest weekend at Kripalu.
Then I tried a 15-minute demo class of Crossfit with trainer Tom Taylor. My legs, shoulders and abs were yelling at me for 3 days. It was wild. Here I was thinking that these simple little exercises would be no big deal, and it truly felt as though I’d run a decathlon. In fact, that is one of the greatest things about Crossfit. It is quick, to the point and the results show quickly. The exercises are simple, fun and keep you interested; but at the same time you are building impressive strength that is there when you need it for all those annoying everyday tasks. I am able to jump on and off my truck bed without back pain. Coming up from a full squat with one leg used to be a challenge – I now notice that it is considerably easier.
In general, my core is becoming stronger every day. And I have only been at it for a month. Sure, my body was a bit achy at first. I’d gone at it pretty hard the first two weeks. The exercises seemed harmless enough while I was doing them. Yeah a few more pushups and sit-ups than I was used to, but the squats with arms high above the head or swinging the kettlebell? How easy is that? Well, the next day it was obvious I’d done some good work – my muscles told me so.
Come join us, you’ll find that workouts can be really fun.

In my work with families, I see kids and parents alike suffering with obesity, lack of energy, hormone imbalances, depression and numerous other ailments caused by both poor nutrition and lack of fitness. What all of us needs, from young children, to performance athletes, to the elderly is a training style that offers lifetime skills and supports lifelong well being. Anyone can do CrossFit to a level of excellent fitness and anyone can do it for a lifetime. CrossFit is fun and rapidly effective for all lifestyles, ages and fitness levels.
My eight year-old is willing to leave Saturday morning cartoons to do CrossFit!
